Introduction to the project

The CBBIA-IAIA South Asia component of the global project – Capacity Building in Biodiversity and Impact Assessment (CBBIA) Project, Asia is being coordinated by the IUCN Asia with the Wildlife Institute of India as  a partner organisation for project implementation.

The CBBIA- Asia component is a seventeen month project. Its contract was signed in August 2005 and is expected to be completed by December 2006. The Asia component of the CBBIA project will focus on the process of incorporating biodiversity concerns in EIA and the development of tools which can be used for effective biodiversity integration in EIA in the region. 

Target countries

The project is aimed to target at 5 countries – Bangladesh, Nepal, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

Project outputs

The project will culminate in the development of three major outputs:

  1. Practitioners Guide on how to incorporate biodiversity in the EIA Process;
  2. Reviewers Guide on how to review for biodiversity concerns in the EIA Reports with guidance from the CBBIA on EIA / SEA;
  3. If required, a pilot training course supported by guidance materials and examples from the target countries.

 Best practice guidance for biodiversity-inclusive impact assessment - A manual for practitioners and reviewers in South Asia was launched in IAIA meeting at Seoul, Korea, during 3 - 4  June 2007.
