There are 447 species of reptiles found in India (Murthy 1994) including 26 species listed as threatened in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Animals (IUCN 2006).  This database provides information on the distribution of reptilian species in various states and protected areas in the country.  The main aim of the National Wildlife Database to develop database on Indian Reptiles are as follows:

  • To collect published checklist of species for various States and PAs

  • Analyse distribution of these species in various protected areas

  • Develop bibliography on Indian Reptiles

  • Develop distribution maps for rare, endangered & endemic species

  • To assess species richness in various Biogeographic Zones, States & PAs
