When and how do I apply for the course?
Fresh admissions take place in the course during odd numbered years. The advertisement inviting applications for the X M. Sc. course has been posted in the Institute’s web site http://www.wii.gov.in/course/regular/msc/xmsc/admission.htm. This will also appear in The Employment News and other national dailies across the country in early January, 2005. The procedures for applying are clearly mentioned in the advertisement.
How do I know if I am eligible to apply for the course?
The eligibility conditions are clearly mentioned in the advertisement. The bachelor’s degree that you hold should have Biology as a major subject. The subject Biology covers wide ranging subjects such as botany, zoology, environmental science, microbiology, biochemistry, biophysics, molecular biology, biotechnology, etc. Applicants with bachelor degree in veterinary science, forestry, agriculture and environmental science are also eligible.
How should I send my application from?
If you are a candidate from Dehradun you can deposit the application in our Institute directly. Outstation candidates can send the application properly sealed and addressed by Registered Post or Speed Post as mentioned in the advertisement.

I am a foreign candidate and interested in applying for the course. How should I go about applying?
There are only two seats for foreign candidates. You should fulfill the eligibility requirements mentioned in the advertisement. You should have a TOEFL score clearly demonstrating proficiency in English language. The application should be made in the format mentioned in the advertisement. Upon evaluation of your application, you will be informed about the venue of the entrance examination, which will be held in the nearest possible Indian High Commission. The candidate must also be prepared to face an interview by telephone or in person as per the decision of the Selection Committee.
The existing course fee for foreign nationals is US $ 11, 000 (for SAARC countries students the fee is US $ 10,000), but likely to be enhanced shortly. This does not include living expenses, books and stationery, and travel to and fro from the country of origin.
When will I know about the entrance examination?
The entrance examination is likely to be held in mid April, 2005. You should be receiving the call letters for the examination in mid March, 2005.
How can I prepare for the entrance examination?
The entrance examination is designed to test your knowledge in basic sciences, optional subject and general awareness at a graduate student level. Preparation would therefore involve wide reading on the optional subject, refreshing basic sciences and general knowledge, and improving awareness about wildlife issues world wide.
When will I know about the personal interview?
You will be receiving the call letters for the personal interview by last week of May, 2005.
When will the course start?
The course is scheduled to commence in the first week of July, 2005.
How can I become qualified for the Institute’s Fellowship?
You have to be an Indian national to qualify for the Institute’s Fellowship. A merit list of Indian nationals will be prepared after the Personality and Aptitude Test. The merit list will be posted on the website and call letters will be sent for admission. Depending on the number of fellowships available, candidates will be selected for the award of fellowship on the basis of their merit. These students will be fully funded by the Institute including a monthly stipend of Rs.1800/-.
If I do not qualify for the Fellowship and I wish to pay the course fee, how can I join the course?
This course admits a maximum of 10 Indian students. After offering seats to the candidates awarded with Institute’s Fellowship, the remaining seats for the Indian students are offered to the subsequent candidates on the merit list. These students will have to bear the entire cost of the course either by themselves or have to arrange sponsorship. The existing course fee is Rs.2,28,225/- and it is likely to be revised shortly.
What are the boarding and lodging facilities available during the course?
The students selected for the course are required to avail on campus lodging and boarding. The students are provided with hostel accommodation and the refectory at the hostel is managed by researchers and students to cater to boarding requirements. The course is one among the few best offered around the world that is aimed at training students to carry out field research in wildlife science to tackle problems related to wildlife conservation. The strengths of the course are (i) its strong field component through study trips and hands on training in wildlife research (ii) its rich course content that will be dealt with by a strong contingent of scientists and supplemented by abundant resource material that are freely accessible at the Institute.

The students are trained to take up independent research during the course and therefore, most of our students pursue higher degrees in India and abroad.
