2nd School in Herpetology
(1 -14 SEPTEMBER 2008)

Course Announcement

 
About the School: The School for Herpetology was conceptualized by Prof. Sushil K. Dutta, North Orissa University with support from Science & Engineering Research Council,  Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. The second school aims to train young biologists in India and its neighbouring countries the field of Herpetology  (studies on amphibians and reptiles). The topics  that will be covered include:

Module I -   Systematics and Biogeography.
Module II -  Ecology and Behaviour
Module III - Reproductive and Developmental biology.
Module VI - Conservation and Management
Module V -  Scientific Writing.

 
Special lectures: New frontiers in Herpetology, The school will provide training in lab and field techniques in different aspects of herpetological research. A field trip will also be organized as part of the course

Bhupathy (Salim Ali Centre for Ornithology and Natural History, Coimbatore, India). Other  eminent researchers in the region will be invited to provide inputs in the school.

Application: Interested persons should submit  their application in the format given in this brochure. Full contact address including e-mail, fax and telephone number, nature of research work and/or teaching experience, a 200 word  summary on “Why you wish to attend the School?” Two letters of recommendation should accompany the application. Applicants who are young research students, post-docs or University faculty members are encouraged to apply. Aspiring candidates serving in Universities should obtain necessary permission to attend the course if selected. A proof of this should be enclosed with their application. The application must reach the Course Coordinator  latest by 15th of July 2008.


The number of candidates to be admitted to this  School is limited to 20, with 15 candidates from India and 5 from neighbouring countries (Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Nepal, Bangladesh and Pakistan). The course fee for all selected candidates will be borne by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. Candidates from neighbouring countries have to make their own arrangements to obtain visa and other documents to attend the course. Local hospitality and travel support (limited to sleeper class train fare as per rules) will be provided to all the selected candidates as part of the course. The Planning Committee of the School will make the selection and the selected  candidates will be informed during 1st week of August 2008.
