Status, distribution and habitats of
orchids in Uttaranchal-Preliminary findings
ABSTRACT
This presentation deals with the taxonomic update on orchids, their status, distribution and range of habits in the state of Uttaranchal. So far 236 species of orchids have been reported from the Uttaranchal state, of which 129 are terrestrial, 97 epiphytic and 10 saprophytic. 13 species of orchids reported from Uttaranchal have been listed in the Red Data Book of Indian plants. Aphyllorchis gollani is expected to have done extinct.16 species have doubtful occurrence. Several localities reported as rich in orchids have transformed in to new landuse practices and most of the low-lying riverine forests have degraded rapidly since last 15-20 years. Therefore, there is a need to have a fresh assessment of the conservation of orchids and their habitats in the state.
During July 2002-July2003 various habitats of orchids (viz., riverine forests, upland forests and temperate grasslands were surveyed systematically for orchids. Strip transects of 10m width were laid in various habitat types (40, 48,15 kms in riverine, upland forest, and temperate grassy slopes respectively). Detailed methods followed for the inventory of habitats have been presented. At least 2 species have been collected for the first time from the state. Several new hosts and interesting localities have been recorded.
