Food habits of leopard in Satpura Tiger Reserve
– Advait Edgaonkar, Senior Research Fellow

ABSTRACT

The food habits of the leopard in Satpura Tiger Reserve were studied. Utilisation of prey species was studied by scat analysis. Based on scat analysis it emerges that chital, sambar, peafowl, langur and porcupine are amongst the major prey species of leopards in Satpura Tiger Reserve. Prey availability was quantified by walking transects and preference of prey was estimated. Encounter rates for major ungulates were done for the second consecutive monsoon season so as to enable a long-term comparison.

Camera trapping identified at least seven individual leopards in the study area.
