The Wildlife Institute of India (WII) is a premier national autonomous Institute of the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoE&F), Government of India in the field of teaching, training and research. The WII wishes to engage sixteen (16) Research Personnel (1-Research Associate, 13-Junior Research Fellows & 2-Technical Assistants) for its various research projects/cells through a Walk-in-Interview on 26th & 27th June 2008. The details of the available positions along with their essential and desirable qualifications, terms and conditions and how to apply are given below.

Details of projects and positions

Project # 1

Title of the project, details of position and duration

An integrated approach to reduce the vulnerability of local community to environmental degradation in the Western Himalayas.

(01 – JRF)

Duration: Three years.

Essential Qualification

Masters degree in Botany/Zoology/Environmental Sciences/Forestry from a recognized University with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks.

Desirable Qualification

Working knowledge on socioeconomic survey, environmental monitoring, vegetation sampling and proficiency in computer applications.

Brief description of the project

The major objectives of this project are to (a) enumerate the key ecosystem functions of the Western Himalayan forested landscapes and estimate the values of major services provided by it (b) study the patterns of interaction between the local livelihoods and natural ecosystems, (c) identify the key drivers of land use and resource use changes that have taken place in the region and assess their implications for ecosystem integrity and vulnerability of the people, (d) identify ecosystem management actions and sustainable livelihood options that may reduce the vulnerability of communities to environmental degradation, and to (e) promote the integration of this approach into emerging policy frameworks for sustainable use of natural resources in the region.

Project # 2

Title of the project, details of position and duration

Evaluating effectiveness of Interpretive Facilities in Enhancing Conservation Awareness in Select Tiger Reserves in India.

(01 – TA)

Duration: One year

Essential Qualification

M.A. in Sociology/Economics/Mass Communication/Anthropology and Psychology or M.Sc. in Botany/Zoology/Environmental Science/Forestry/ Wildlife Science, degree with a minimum of 55% aggregate marks.

Desirable Qualification

Experience of conducting surveys and knowledge of computers

Description of Work

·          Undertake field visits for collection of data from 28 Tiger Reserves

·          Compile information received from the sites and from secondary sources

·          Conduct visitor surveys

Project # 3

Title of the project, details of position and duration

Research Laboratory.

(01 – RA)

Duration: Initially for a period of three years and may be extended for another term not exceeding two years.

Essential Qualification

Ph.D degree in Zoology/Botany/Wildlife Sciences/Environmental Sciences/Forestry/ Experi-mental Biology/Biological Sciences/Life Sciences/ Social Sciences from a recognized University. Those who have published their work in peer reviewed journals and shown evidence of capability to do independent research work will have a preference.

Desirable Qualification

(1) Adequate experience from any reputed laboratory in using advance analytical techniques for plant, animal, soil and water samples.

(2) Experience in handling and maintenance of various laboratory analytical equipments (AAS, HPLC, UV-VIS Spectrophotometer etc.) and operational knowledge of various computer software(s).

Brief description of the project

The work involves field visits and laboratory analysis for plant, animal, soil and water samples and also teaching advanced analytical techniques.

Project # 4

Title of the project, details of position and duration

An assessment of entomofauna for management and conservation of biodiversity in the Gangotri landscape.

(01 – JRF)

Duration: Four years.

Essential Qualification

M.Sc. (Zoology/Life Science/Environmental Sciences/Wildlife Science) from a recognized University with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks.

Desirable Qualification

M.Sc. Zoology with specialization in Entomology will be preferred.

Brief description of the project

The project aims to assess entomofaunal status, distribution and diversity in Gangotri landscape.

Project # 5

Title of the project, details of position and duration

Diversity of spiders in Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve.

(01 – JRF)

Duration: Three years.

Essential Qualification

M.Sc. (Zoology/Life Science/Environmental Sciences/Wildlife Science from a recognized University with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks.

Desirable Qualification

M.Sc. Zoology with knowledge of Arachnids will be preferred.

Brief description of the project

The project aims to assess the status, distribution and diversity of spiders in Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve.

Project # 6

Title of the project, details of position and duration

Developing spatial database on the mammal distributions and monitoring programme for large carnivores, prey populations and their habitats in Khangchendzonga Biosphere Reserve.

(01–JRF)

Duration: Four years.

Essential Qualification

M.Sc. in Wildlife Biology/Zoology from a recognized University with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks.

Desirable Qualification

Wildlife research experience in the Sikkim Himalaya. Only candidates with strong physical and mental abilities and a keen desire to carryout arduous field work in the remote and rugged high altitudes of the Sikkim Himalaya under extreme cold or rainy conditions with minimal logistic support may apply. Knowledge on avifauna will be preferred.

Brief description of the project

This project aims to develop a spatial database and monitoring programme for the mammals of Khangchendzonga Biosphere Reserve with special reference to large carnivores and their prey, and their habitats.  This project involves extensive and field work in the remote, rugged, high altitude regions of Sikkim Himalayan region and also extensive lab work related to dietary analysis, molecular genetic studies, and computer based modeling analysis.

Project # 7

Title of the project, details of position and duration

A study on sympatric carnivores (tiger, leopard and wild dog) in Mudumalai Tiger Reserve, Tamil Nadu, India.

(01–JRF)

Duration: Three years.

Essential Qualification

M.Sc. (Wildlife Science/Forestry/Environmental Science/Zoology) from a recognized University with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks.

Desirable Qualification

Experience in GIS and Remote Sensing, vegetation quantification techniques and socio-economic studies. Willing to work with local communities in Mudumalai.

Brief description of the project

1.  To estimate density, distribution, group size and composition of prey species of sympatric carnivores (tiger, leopard and dhole).

2.  To study the food habits and prey selectivity of sympatric carnivores.

3.  To estimate the population of the sympatric carnivores.

4.  To study the distribution of sympatric carnivores and their prey species with specific reference to anthropogenic pressure, and

5. To develop conservation action plan for these sympatric carnivores.

 

Project # 8

Title of the project, details of position and duration

Comparison of tiger (Panthera tigris) population estimated using non-invasive techniques of Pugmark, Camera Trap and DNA based analysis of hair and scat in Ranthambore Tiger Reserve – Phase II.

(01–JRF)

Duration: Till 27.10.2009.

Essential Qualification

M.Sc. in Animal Genetics/Molecular Biology/Biotechnology or M.V.Sc. in Animal Genetics from a recognized University with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks.

Desirable Qualification

Experience in electrophoresis and molecular genetics using PCR based techniques, PCR-RFLP and DNA sequencing/developing species specific characteristics.

Brief description of the project

Undertake work for DNA extraction, PCR amplification and DNA sequencing for genotyping work for tiger samples.

Project # 9

Title of the project, details of position and duration

Conservation ecology of Sangai (Cervus eldi eldi) and wetland habitat.

(01–JRF)

Duration: Up to December 2009.

Essential Qualification

M.Sc. in Botany from a recognized University with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks.

Desirable Qualification

Work experience in Manipur. Preparation of floristic list and aquatic plant studies. Computer proficient.

Brief description of the project

Productivity analysis, soil and water analysis based at Keibul Lamjao National Park, Manipur.

Project # 10

Title of the project, details of position and duration

Research and conservation of endangered and threatened fauna of Kutch: An integrated approach.

(03 – JRFs)

Duration: Up to December 2009.

Essential Qualification

M.Sc. in Forestry/Ecology/Wildlife Science, from a recognized University with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks.

Desirable Qualification

Experience in Field based research or conservation project. Demonstrate field work using research techniques involving radio telemetry/camera trapping/behavior study/survey of endangered species/community work.

Brief description of the project

Telemetry monitoring of Indian fox, hyaenas, wolves and survey and monitoring of vulture populations, Great Indian bustard, lesser florican and community conservation programmes.

Project # 11

Title of the project, details of position and duration

Ecology of brown bear (Ursus arctos) with special reference to assessment of man-brown bear conflicts in Kugti Wildlife Sanctuary, Himachal Pradesh, India.

(01 – JRF)

Duration: Up to 05.03.2009.

Essential Qualification

M.Sc. in Zoology/Environment Science/Wildlife Science/Animal Science/Life Sciences/ Biological Science, from a recognized University with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks.

Desirable Qualification

Experience on large carnivore/herbivore research, habitat evaluation, estimating prey abundance, food habit analysis and human-wildlife conflict. Candidate with trekking experience in hills, knowledge of Hindi or/and local language of Himachal Pradesh to interact with local community, and knowledge of computer software, will be preferred.

Brief description of the project

The project aims to study ecology of brown bear and man-brown bear conflict in Kugti wildlife sanctuary, Chamba. Information on vegetation composition and structure, bear distribution, impact of biotic pressures on habitat, food habits of brown bear and socio-economic impacts of conflict on rural community will be collected.

Project # 12

Title of the project, details of position and duration

Status and distribution of Malayan sun bear (Helarctos malayanus) in North-Eastern states, India.

(01 – JRF)

Duration: Up to 09.10.2009.

Essential Qualification

M.Sc. in Zoology/Environment Science/Wildlife Science/Life Sciences, from a recognized University with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks.

Desirable Qualification

Experience on large carnivore/herbivore research, habitat evaluation, estimating prey abundance, food habit analysis and human-wildlife conflict. Candidates having experience of tracking in hills and to work with local communities of North-Eastern states and knowledge of computer software will be preferred.

Brief description of the project

The project aims to study the status and distribution of Malayan sun bear in Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland and Mizoram. Information on occurrence and distribution of sun bear, habitat use, food habit, human-sun bear conflict and illegal trade will be collected.

Project # 13

Title of the project, details of position and duration

Ecological effects of roads through sensitive habitats: Implications for wildlife conservation.

(01 – JRF)

Duration: Three years.

Essential Qualification

M.Sc. in Zoology/ Animal Science/ Plant Science/ Wildlife Science/ Life Science/ Biological Science with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks

Desirable Qualification

Adequate experience of undertaking field based studies in wildlife areas; Experience of undertaking impact assessment of development projects; Knowledge of wildlife survey techniques and computer based approaches for data analysis for EIA.

Brief description of the project

To assess the nature of ecological effects associated with roads based on the study of existing and new road sections aligned through or along an ecologically sensitive area

Project # 14

Title of the project, details of position and duration

Social organization and dispersal in Asiatic lions.

(01 – TA)

Duration: Up to 07.03.2009

Essential Qualification

M.Sc. in Wildlife Science/ Environment Science/Forestry/Botany, from a recognized University with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks.

Desirable Qualification

Knowledge of GIS and Remote Sensing with working experience specifically in Arc GIS and ERDAS software.

Description of Work

·          Developing habitat and land use map in and around Gir PA.

·          Developing habitat suitability models.

GENERAL:

  1. Candidate for the position of RAs should be below 40 years of age as on 20th June 2008. Upper age limit may be relaxed up to 5 years for candidates belonging to SC/ST. For the position of JRFs/TAs, the age shall not be more than 28 years as on 20th June 2008. Upper age limit may be relaxed up to 5 years, as in case of candidates (SRF/JRF/TA) belonging to SC/ST/OBC/Women and physically handicapped categories.

  2. Selected candidates for the position of Research Associate (RA) will be paid consolidated emoluments as per the norms of Department of Science and Technology, Government of India depending upon professional qualifications and experience in any one of the following categories RA-I (Rs.16,000/month), RA-II (Rs.17,000/month); RA-III (Rs.18,000/month).

  3. Selected candidates for the position of Junior Research Fellow (JRF) will be paid consolidated emoluments of Rs. 12,000/- per month. For candidates with veterinary background the fellowship amount is Rs. 14,000/- (consolidated) per month for JRFs. The fellowship to TA will be 6,400/- (consolidated) per month.   

  4. All research personnel may be allowed hostel accommodation at the institute, as per availability. Where the hostel accommodation is not possible, house rent allowance (HRA) will be paid as per the rules of the Institute subject to the condition that HRA payable, in no case, shall be more than the rates payable to Central Govt./WII Employee(s) in that area. Other allowances and benefits to the research personnel would be admissible as per the rules of the Institute, amended from time to time.

  5. Engagement on the above positions will be purely on a temporary basis initially and may be extended for further period depending upon the requirement and the tenure of project.

  6. The selection of the candidate will be based on Walk-in-Interview to be held on 26th and 27th June 2008 at the Wildlife Institute of India, Dehra Dun.

  7. Canvassing in any form is liable to rejection of the candidature.

  8. Interviews for the project # 1 to 8 will be conducted on 26th June 2008 and the registrations of candidates will begin by 09:00 A.M. onwards on 26th June 2008.

  9. Interviews for the project # 9 to 14 will be conducted on 27th June 2008 and the registrations of candidates will begin by 09:00 A.M. onwards on 27th June 2008.

  10. Candidates should bring the duly filled-in applications with attested true copies of testimonials of educational qualifications, research experience, extra curricular activities, date of birth etc., along with copies of mark sheets of all examinations. All original documents should be produced at the time of registration.

  11. Candidates may apply separately for each advertised position. In any case, the candidate may not be allowed to apply for more than two advertised positions.

  12. Candidates working in other Organizations/Universities should bring their applications forwarded through proper channel. In such cases the candidates will have to produce `No Objection Certificate’ at the time of Interview.

  13. Applications without enclosures and/or incomplete in any respect shall be liable to rejection. 

  14. Two way travel expenses will be paid to the candidates, selected for the project(s). The expense will be limited to actual 2nd class rail/bus fare by the shortest route from his/her place of stay/residence.

  15. Candidates are advised to come prepared to stay at Dehra Dun on 26th or 27th June 2008 and shall make their own arrangements for accommodation. The Institute will not provide accommodation for candidates appearing for the interview.
