Many wildlife species and communities are endangered, and their conservation often requires scientific understanding, Preparing and implementing detailed management plans for nearly 500 protected areas requires a strong scientific foundation. Management inputs, habitat parameters and species populations need constant monitoring, if conservation efforts are to be effective.

However, wildlife and animal ecology are relatively new subjects within the university systems in India. Some colleges offer a paper or two at the B.Sc. or M.Sc. levels but very few institutions integrate animal and plant ecology into a single discipline. Only two other institutions in the country offer a post-graduate degree in Wildlife Science.

The two-year M.Sc. course in Wildlife Science at the Wildlife Institute of India, not only seeks to meet the increasing demand for research and monitoring of wildlife and their habitats, and provide trained biologists to further the cause of wildlife conservation, but also serves as a model for developing higher wildlife education elsewhere in the cou

ntry.

TEACHING INPUTS

The course is organized into four semesters as follows :

  • Semester I    July-November (December vacation)

  • Semester II   January-May (June vacation)

  • Semester III  July-October

  • Semester IV  November-April (field work)

  • May-June (Dissertation writing)

The first three semesters are used for lectures, seminars and field practicals. The fourth semester is utilized for specified fieldwork followed by writing a thesis based on it.

Teaching is done in 45 units of "core" or compulsory courses and 5 units of optional courses (each unit consisting of 10 lectures), associated laboratory classes and seminars. The optional courses are taught in the third semester depending on the student's choice and the availability of faculty expertise at the time.

Frequent critical reviews are conducted of published research during lectures and seminars. Students will be expected to read and discuss original research papers (not merely textbooks) as background to lectures and seminars. In order to foster a mature attitude to acquiring knowledge and conducting its critical appraisal, seminar-type discussions are a major teaching method. Students are required to complete three elective papers comprising tutorial and directed reading sessions leading to an in-depth analysis and write-up of selected topics.
